Fonner Park 8/19 mon
On our way home, we're looking for places to stop and break up the long ride. Yesterdays Carhenge was an interesting one that I used last year on my way through Nebraska.
Nate wasn't with me last year, so
Fonner Park in Grand Island, NE wasn't something I stopped at. His last name is Fonner. And this park is where the Nebraska state fair is held. They have a horse track and casino. It's a large place, currently being prepped for a circus, and renovations. We talk with security and they sent us to the horse track side of the park. Tucker and I sat with the bikes in the parking lot while Nate went in. The manager took him out to the track to take photos, gave him some free tee shirts and the "family discount" on his sweatshirt. We then looped back to the gates for photos with the sign.
Finding campgrounds isn't always easy. We picked one on the gps that was located perfectly fir our next stop. The hitch was it was at an amusement park. Which I thought would be expensive, loud and full of kid. Perhaps not midweek...
Adventureland Altoon, IA turned out to be the cheapest campground yet at $18.50 for all three of us. Low occupancy, a large tenting area, and decent bathroom facilities. Tenting was far from the bathrooms, and the road system was all one way and made you circle the park to use any of the three available restroom.
After pitching our tents we visited Jethro"s BBQ. Conveniently located across the stret from our campground. Signs on the highway claimed it was world famous. It was very good food, and a lot of it.
Somewhere in Silverton I seemed to loose my appetite. Felt like I was always full. So I haven't been eating as much. Jethro"s was very filling, and I really didn't feel like eating again until the following afternoon.
